KAPUTAR TOP SECRET OF
NEIGEPEARL (PACH-KELI OZ) Toby has the title of Swedish Bloodtracking Champion
Toby whilst in Toby’s Story We purchased Toby from New South Wales (NSW) along with his two
longcoat sisters, in 2006 from his owners who needed to urgently re-locate.
Toby and his sisters were about 1 year old, had never been socialized,
trained or looked after. They were kennelled most of the time. His two litter
sisters were extremely shy, though Toby was the toughest one out of them all!
We wanted to secure these puppies, so they did not end up in puppy mills or
with backyard breeders. Toby is a backyard-bred dog, out of one of our Neigepearl pups, Neigepearl
Arctic Ice (Neo) from our 1st litter in 2003. Toby was born from an accidental litter. Toby’s
father, Neo was mated with his owners’ older White Shepherd female, ‘Baron Trinity’,
at just 6 months old. Baron Trinity was not x-rayed or approved for breeding.
We convinced the owner to hip/elbow x-ray Neo at 12 months old. Luckily, the
results were very good. Baron Trinity was never x-rayed. We do not condone
this kind of irresponsible breeding – and we would NEVER sell THREE puppies
to one owner at once either! This is
why we now have strict contracts on all our dogs/puppies! Neo’s owners tried to hide further litters they bred, by not
advertising in newspapers etc, so we have no idea where these puppies ended
up. They told puppy buyers never to contact us, as we would make them euthanise
their dogs! This was crazy! It was a desperate attempt to breed irresponsibly
and secretly with our blood lines. Since we live so far away and interstate from where Toby lived,
our dear friend in NSW, qualified dog trainer, Rachel Devenish-Meares (Schatzfunde)
assessed Toby’s temperament. Rachel was happy with his temperament and picked
him up for me. Rachel loved her time
with Toby and he settled in very fast with her, even though it was only a few
days or so. A woman in Sweden from Kennel Ciwi, (Jill Adolfsson) expressed a
lot of interest in Toby, for new bloodlines for their country. We gave all
the health and temperament information on our dogs and bloodlines so they
could make an informed decision with importing Toby. Since Kennel Ciwi did
not have much money to pay for the dog, we agreed that we would send Toby to
them and we pay for all his expenses relating (purchase price, hip and elbow
x-rays, microchips, vaccinations and all vaccines and requirements needed to
export him to Sweden). In return, our agreement
was that we had to choose a puppy from any kennel of our choice from
Europe. It was to be a blood line exchange to add genetic diversity to Australia
and Europe. Alpinarc Kennels in NSW agreed to board Toby in her kennels
while we waited for his blood test results. In exchange for this help with
feeding and boarding Toby, we agreed that Alpinarc could have a puppy out of
the puppy we import from Toby’s exchange. As he stayed for several months, we
travelled up to Alpinarc Kennels to visit Toby. After all, he is out of a Neigepearl bred
dog, so he was a part of the Neigepearl family! He was a little nervous and
unsure, but that is to be expected from a dog who never received any training
or socialisation and lived in the country. Whilst boarding at Alpinarc Kennels, Toby was a very bad boy,
chewing his way through wire fences, garage doors and even a dog trailer to get
to the females in season, one of which he soon after sired a litter to,
Whitemist Tia. Alpinarc refused to pay Toby’s stud fee – the cost of one
puppy – the excuse given that the mating was an ‘accident’. Accidents can and
do happen and we accept this. But whilst in Australia, Toby was legally owned
by us. We paid for everything for him –
including his purchase price. A stud
fee should have been paid – accident or no accident – as puppies were sold at
decent prices and a litter was produced. Alpinarc Kennels offered to pay a stud fee to Kennel Ciwi – even
though they did not own him and had not given anything to us in return for
Toby! There was a relationship breakdown as a result, and Alpinarc Kennels
said that if we did not find Toby a place to stay within 48 hours, that he
would be dumped at the local pound. We were very angry and upset at this. We
found a boarding kennel who agreed to pick him up from Alpinarc and board him
for a few weeks before his flight to Sweden. It cost us a lot of money for
Toby to board at this kennel, but at least we knew he was safe. When Toby arrived in Sweden, to our surprise, he went to live
with someone else, who we did not know. This was a disappointment as I
expected him to live with Kennel Ciwi.
As caring breeders, we like to make sure we screen our own homes and
make sure the person is suitable. We at least want to know who they are! We were not given any details for where he
was staying or how to contact his new owner.
Though, from the photos, it appeared that he was being cared for very
well. Toby started blood tracking and also did a some bitework and became
Swedish Blood tracking Champion. We looked for a very long time for the right dog and the
bloodlines to import back to Australia as per our contract. After a long search, we finally found a litter and picked a
puppy from Vivid Daydream Kennel in Netherlands from the Cumano x Daisy
litter. We contacted Kennel Ciwi to let her know we have finally found the
right puppy, with the right genetics, health and type we were searching so
long for. We were very excited! Suddenly, when we asked if she could pay for our puppy we chose,
Kennel Ciwi stopped emailing us and became very quiet. As per our agreement,
Kennel Ciwi had to pay for this puppy and her vaccinations. We spent over
$2000 in sending Toby to Kennel Ciwi and our agreement was for a blood line
exchange for a puppy of our choice! We had arranged with Vivid
Daydream that until she could come to Australia – she would stay at the
breeder’s home who would show, train and socialise her. Kennel Ciwi ignored our emails. The excuse given was that Kennel
Ciwi did not like Vivid Daydream kennels. We had no idea why. Kennel Ciwi refused to pay for our puppy
and therefore broke our written agreement for the blood line exchange. We are lucky that we had a signed contract about this “blood
line exchange”! Otherwise, we would have given a dog away and spent $2000 for
nothing! The breach clause in the
contract said that if a party breached the agreement, they would have to pay legal
costs associated with the agreement’s enforcement. Before taking legal action over the breached agreement, we requested
that Kennel Ciwi simply reimburse us for Toby (which we kept receipts for).
This was also refused. As a last resort, we employed the services of a local
Swedish lawyer to Kennel Ciwi, to get back our money we paid to send Toby to
Sweden. It took over two years for us to get our money back for Toby via the lawyer we
employed. We were told she was on a
disability pension and did not have any money, so small monthly payments had
to be made. Though, we were angry to find out that she was studding Tony out in
Sweden and fees for this. She was also
buying another puppy! But she couldn’t afford to pay us for Toby... We learnt a very hard lesson. When it comes to money, people
cannot be trusted – even people who you consider ‘friends’. Never enter a
breeding arrangement with anyone (even friends!), because things easily get
complicated when it comes to greed and money! Kennel Ciwi does not mention anything about getting Toby from us
at Neigepearl. We never got any thanks
whatsoever. His kennel name has been
discarded and Kennel Ciwi re-registered him, with no connection to
Neigepearl. Instead, on her website she thanks the backyard breeders where Toby
came from, and Alpinarc Kennels http://www.ciwi.se/etoby2b.html
who threatened to dump him and not pay his stud fees. Forget that he escaped
several times and had near death experiences and had to be resuscitated
because his collar was strangling him in an accident! WOW, that’s something
to be really thankful for, Kennel Ciwi! Forget everything we did for you and taking
the money out of our pocket so you could have a dog to stud out, while we get
nothing. There are some very dodgy, jealous breeders out there! There are
too many for us to worry about, so we now do our own thing and only keep
company with people we trust to do the right thing. We breed the very best dogs we can because we love the breed and
are all about ethics and breed improvement! We never want to see any more of
our hard work and precious puppies end up with backyard breeders! Tobys story is certainly one of rags to riches!
