Karo (Karo) DOB: 6/6/2000 AVA Hips 3:3 Elbows 0:0 H-Neg Karo
retired from breeding in 2004 Karo was born on 6 June, 2000. He has a lovely soft &
gentle nature and is a Karo is our first ever
White German Shepherd. His parents were black and gold who carried the white
gene. Karo’s grandmother was an ANKC registered
sable-coloured female who had a fully registered white father and a black and
gold mother. This was when the ANKC still registered whites on the main
register and allowed them to be bred from. His pedigree is
concentrated of quality ANKC lines, of what we call "the old Victorian
whites", such as Alpenwolf, Avonbel, Bayein & Spidola dogs, as well as well-known and influential GSD
Champion lines such as Ch Prima Zorba. Many of the
registered whites in Karo’s pedigree earned
significant ANKC obedience and tracking titles. Karo was one of Australia’s first stud dogs in the Australian
breeding program and was the stud with the best hip and elbow score for many
years. The
gene pool was very small back then (with Karo the 7th
registered dog in the stud book) and with Karo’s
genes, we built an excellent foundation for our kennel and so did many other breeders.
Karo at 12 years of age
Not bad for a 12 year
old! Before we made the
decision to breed Karo, we consulted respected
Veterinarian and White Shepherd Club Veterinary Consultant, Ray Ferguson as
only one of Karo’s testicles descended. Dr Ferguson
approved him for breeding, writing, Karo is “excellent genetic material” for the
breed and that his “progeny should be
monitored in regard to testes”. After many years and over 250 puppies,
grand puppies and great grand-puppies were produced from Karo
(from our lines and other breeders) before a male ancestor down the line was
produced with an undescended teste. This is very impressive,
considering how common it is in the breed in general and how many people
assume it is a simple recessive mode of inheritance. In our experience in
dealing with known carriers and producers, I can tell you there are more ways
that this fault is produced and inherited. Though, in saying this, we would not
use a dog with one testicle now since the gene pool in Australia is quite
substantial and does not need the support of breeding dogs with such faults. We have always been open and upfront about Karo’s testicle and all other breeders used him with the
knowledge of this situation, which is the ethical and responsible thing to
do. Karo was never disqualified when he was shown
in WSSDCA and WGSDAV conformation shows, as judges were aware of the small genepool and other dogs with faults, so they were quite lenient. Karo was used to improve
type, hip and elbow quality in the breed, which he did successfully. His puppies are very typically intelligent
and do well at performance dog sports.
Karo has children, grandchildren and great
grandchildren who are ANKC titled in obedience,
agility endurance and tracking.
The majority of ANKC performance titled whites in Australia
are descended directly from Karo. He has
descendants now in Hawaii, Sweden and Finland. Karo was bred to Ghostcloud Casper, Alb’ino Royal Princess, White Buffalo Cheyenne (producing
our first litter) and Whitemile Xena.
Though, the
litter from Whitemile Xena
could not be confirmed as sired by Karo. The breeder
(Heather Scott, Whyteridge Kennels), also mated her bitch with
another male afterwards (a dog NOT approved for breeding) without our
knowledge. She then refused to DNA test the resulting 3 puppies (which she hid
from the public). We had the legal right to follow up this
situation, but chose not to waste our money and time on someone living so
far away who refused to do the right thing in the problem that she created. We have
decided to finally lay out the facts and evidence that illustrates why you
must ALWAYS use stud contracts when
breeding your dog, regardless if the other party is a “friend” or not.
Supporting Appendices A B C D E are also included, so people
can make up their own mind about Ms Scott. More recently, I have been approached
by her at an ANKC show where she confronted me and publicly abused me for owning/breeding
Australian white shepherds (not yet recognised by the ANKC). I just laughed and walked away. Since Ms
Scott imported White Swiss Shepherds and re-registered with the ANKC, she is
now strongly opposing the recognition of the Australian lines – the same
lines she once bred and strongly supported, and the same lines that have been
exported and officially accepted overseas. There really is no difference
between the dogs, but this is what happens when people’s personal and
financial gain is put about the benefit of the breed. Ms Scott also has
continued harassing me over the years, which clearly shows that she is not in
dogs for the enjoyment and improvement of them. In a perfect world, people
would be honest and put the dogs and breed over petty personal issues based on
jealously, fear of competition, money and ego. We will always fight for what is right. *sigh*, when will other people learn?
