DNA TESTING

To verify parentage

DNA Testing

Why DNA Test?

- Pedigree assurance and identity

- Parentage/Stud Book Accuracy

When is DNA testing useful?

For accidental matings where it was not certain who the sire of the litter is. Although accidental matings can and do happen, responsible breeders will ensure that their dogs are properly confined and safe during times when bitches are in season.

DNA testing will verify parentage when all possible sires the dam and the puppies are tested. This also ensures stud book and registration accuracy.

Australian Canine Pedigree Assurance Programme

Collection

A simple, non-invasive buccal (cheek) swab, collected by a vet or authorised Collection Officer, allows GSS scientists to establish your dog's unique DNA profile, determine parentage and assess hereditary disease.

Identification
Accurate identification of your dog prior to taking its sample is a key element of the program. Identifying your dog by microchip or tattoo number is essential in making sure the identification of the dog being tested is correct, this is termed 'Positive ID'.

With the progessing technology in genetic testing, we hope that many more tests will be available to the German Shepherd dog breed to lower the incidence of many breed specific diseases.

Do you have a dog who has been diagnosed with a genetic disease? Why not donate some of their DNA to Genetic Technologies for research projects?
